‘Right here, right now. It’s historical, big, huge and beautiful’ Ed Clews 22 – 28th April 2024

looks at the community in the environment of a walled garden which is run by Brunswick – a place that provides a work-like environment for adults with learning disabilities. The team cares for it year-round: creating wood-worked items, growing vegetables to sell in their own shop and developing the garden. They have been doing this for nearly twenty years.
My aim is to collaborate with the Brunswick community on how they are seen on their own terms without relying on the societal label that's placed upon them. I also want the audience to discover the walled garden and reflect on it as a place that can give people their own agency and autonomy.
I am examining themes of representation, community and visibility. Gardens have their own psychological effect, creating a place of sanctuary and growth on which individuals can base their own values.
The walled garden is a contradictory place. On the one hand, it is a place most people walk or drive past every day without knowing it is there. But it is also a place where people can thrive, be validated and be seen on their own terms. The project also speaks to how people in underserved communities can be hidden and not hidden simultaneously within society.
There are multiple traces of historical, natural and social layers to be discovered – vignettes of smaller environments within an already enclosed space on top of which sits the seasonal cycle of growth and renewal in cultivated and rewilded areas. Brunswick itself is only a small part of the story as the garden has existed in some form since the late 1700s.
It is the basis of the desire of any group of human beings to have a place of their own, a place which gives them reality, presence, power of living, which feeds them, body and soul.
Paul Tillich (1995)

‘Beyond Normal’ ‘Beyond Normal’ showcases the collective works of local artists Lincoln Lightfoot and Reid Bennington beginning with the exclusive preview on Friday 10th May 6-9pm and then throughout the following week Sat 11th-Sun 19th May from 10am-5pm daily. ‘Beyond Normal’ follows creatures in unusual situations and confronts the absurdity of the now! The exhibition offers a comical style of escapism from everyday problems and promises to be an exciting and enjoyable for art lovers of all ages! Inspired by a love of b-movie poster art Lightfoot depicts unusual happenings staged in well-known settings whilst tapping into the present condition of fear that our news media and politicians perpetuate in a post Covid-19 world. Bennington’s work follows humanoid animal creatures complete with animated expression in comical scenarios. Illustrations and 3D works fascinate, engage and are oddly relatable. Our York exhibition space is situated on the first floor, accessibly via 2 flights of stairs, of the York Fabrication Retail space, 19 Coney St, York, YO1 9QL, within a 2 minute walk to buses and a 10 minute walk to car parks and to York Railway Station, surrounded by other independent shops, bars and restaurants and in the heart of York City Centre. Introduction to Gold Leaf
Rob Oldfield is a gilder, typographer and educator, with nearly forty years experience working in museums and historic interiors. He recognizes the importance of crafts like gilding and he has a desire to pass on his knowledge so that it does not become yet another ‘forgotten art’ in an increasingly digital world. Gilding is a decorative technique for applying a very thin coating of metal to solid surfaces. The effect is beautiful and this is a rare opportunity to learn it yourself. Cost is £15 including all materials, equipment and tuition along with tea, coffee, biscuits. Shaun J Casey ArtRead moreShaun Casey is from Leeds, the Hyde Park Headingley area, he went to the Leeds Metropolitan University where he gained my BA ( Hons) degree in graphic arts and design, majoring in illustration, He's always had an interest in drawing but never pursued in his younger years due to helping bring up a young family. In 2011 he spent some of his spare time drawing the exhibits at the Royal Armouries in Leeds where his work was spotted by staff and an exhibition of his work at the Armouries ensued. This gave his confidence a lift and although it was stop start regarding drawing again, he picked up the pen once more in 2019 and started drawing animals in fine liner ink, he liked the control of the pen and the deep dark textures of the ink and before he knew it he started illustrating a book on WW1, he have completed 62 A3 ink drawings on this his wife Lesley-Jane writing the back stories. They are hoping to publish the book later this year, he hopes all that see my work will find it aesthetically pleasing, he's never really thought of myself as an artist but a craftsman with a pen.Free Entry daily, 10 - 5pm The exhibition space is situated on the first floor, accessibly via 2 flights of stairs, of the York Fabrication Retail space, 19 Coney St, York, YO1 9QL, within a 2 minute walk to buses and a 10 minute walk to car parks and to York Railway Station, surrounded by other independent shops, bars and restaurants and in the heart of York City Centre.
