Miniature Treasure Bookbinding – 10th Nov
12:30-16:00
£40 a head. Maximum 8 participants.
Suitable for beginners but some previous craft experience is helpful. Recommended for ages 16+
Miniature bindings have existed almost as long as books, sometimes worn as a talisman, and sometimes used as a flex of the crafter’s abilities. Any book under 3 inches (7.5 cms) in size is classified as a miniature binding. For historic books, books under 5 inches (ca 13cms) is classifies as a miniature. Treasure bindings are books that have been further embellished by silver and jewels by skilled jewellers before being bound by a binder.
In this class, you will make your own modern accessible version of a miniature ‘treasure’ book to keep or gift. All the fun of bookbinding at a fraction of the size. This class will take you through the basics of making a miniature binding, using book cloth, beautiful decorative papers, and embellishments, including optional brass corners, ties, or clasps. All the techniques used are similar to those used in standard-sized bindings but modified to work at a smaller scale.
All materials will be provided but participants are very welcome to bring their own papers or decorative elements to incorporate into their bindings, if suitable. The finished binding will be somewhere between 5-7.5cms in height, with plain pages ready for you to fill.
Your finished book can be left as is or instruction will be given into how to turn it into wearable jewellery. Gift boxes are included.
Your class will be led by Linette from Anachronalia, a Leeds-based bookbinder, who has been binding books for over 10 years and has a particular interest in historic and miniature bindings.
